Why Spirituality

First, consider the underlying assumptions of western culture and western science.  If creation randomly evolved; if the whole is no more than the sum of its parts; if interaction is limited by proximity, then health and wellness should be a simple matter of finding the right drug to affect the needed correction and restore health.  Unfortunately, both personal experience and empiric evidence reveal this to not be the case.   So, on the other hand, if creation is planned and purposed; if the whole is more than the sum of its parts; if interaction occurs across space and time, then health and wellness become much more than the manipulation of material reality – they become the harmony and balance of body, mind and spirit.  They become holistic health.

So, what does this have to do with spirituality?  Holistic health requires us to view existence from a “more than” perspective.  If life is more than what our senses reveal to us, then we need to be willing to consider the existence of something beyond ourselves.  It follows that that “something” would reveal itself through creation just as an artist reveals herself through her artwork.  Creation reveals an amazing degree of relationship and interaction.  In short, it reveals love.  We are created by love, for love, in love and sustained by love.  By a God who is love.  This is why spirituality is the foundation of the foundations of health.  Love is the only firm rock that we can stand on.  The only thing that, no matter what the storms of life send our way, remains as a firm foothold.  Love is balance and harmony.
